Regulatory Tox Flashcards
what is the equation for the determination of safety
risk=hazard(toxicity)*(exposure)
define hazard assessment
involves the identification and description of the toxicological features of a substance
describe dose/exposure response evaluation
very high exposure levels likely do not reflect the risks that would be expected out typically and actual field exposure levels
how are carcinogens characterized
characterized by a ‘no threshold” dose response relationship
what is the no threshold dose relationship
there will always be some level of risk, even if it can’t be directly measured (at every level of exposure)
describe group 2 carcinogens
2a) probably
2b) possibly
describe group 3 carcinogens
the agent is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans
describe group 4 carcinogens
not likely to be carcinogenic
what is teratogenicity
property of a chemical which causes permanent structural or functional abnormality during embryonic development
what is NOAEL
highest dose that doesn’t give any adverse effects
what is ADI
acceptable daily limit (more conservative than NOAEL)
what are the assumptions in determination. of food safety
- all commodities always contain the pesticide residue
- the residue is always present at the max permitted level
- consumers only eat commodities containing residues
- dietary exposure to it will occur everyday of life
