Regulation of body temperature Flashcards
three systems that regulate body temperature
sensors in the periphery and in the core
an integrator in the hypothalamus
an effector system that adjusts the production and loss of heat
when the skin become chilled over the entire body, three physiologic processes to increase the body temperature take place:
- shivering increases heat production
- sweating is inhibited to decrease heat loss
- vasoconstriction decreases heat loss
is the center that controls the core temperature
hypothalamic integrator
it sends out signals intended to reduce the temperature, that is, to decrease heat production and increase heat loss.
when the integrator detects heat
the integrator sends out signals to increase heat production and decrease heat loss
when the cold sensors are stimulated
increases cellular metabolism and hence heat production
release of epinephrine
when the warmth- sensitive receptors in the hypothalamus are stimulated, the effector systems sends out signals that initiate
sweating and peripheral vasodilation
what are the factors that affect the body temperature?
- age
- diurnal variations (circadian rhythms)
- exercise
- hormones
- stress
- environment
many older people, particularly those over 75 years, are at risk of _____ (temperature below 36°C or 96.8°F)
hypothermia
