Regulation of Blood Glucose Levels - Insulin Flashcards

1
Q

Describe how insulin decreases blood glucose levels back to the normal level.

A
  • Beta cells in the pancreas detect the high level and release insulin
  • Insulin binds to specific protein receptors in the liver cell membrane
  • This causes an increase in the number of glucose channels so more glucose moves into the liver cells by facilitated diffusion
  • Glucose molecules are joined together via glycosidic bonds to form glycogen (GLYCOGENESIS)
  • Excess glucose is converted into fats and proteins
  • Rate of respiration increases
