Regulation of Blood Glucose Levels - Insulin Flashcards
1
Q
Describe how insulin decreases blood glucose levels back to the normal level.
A
- Beta cells in the pancreas detect the high level and release insulin
- Insulin binds to specific protein receptors in the liver cell membrane
- This causes an increase in the number of glucose channels so more glucose moves into the liver cells by facilitated diffusion
- Glucose molecules are joined together via glycosidic bonds to form glycogen (GLYCOGENESIS)
- Excess glucose is converted into fats and proteins
- Rate of respiration increases
