Regulation: Nervous System Flashcards
neuron
the functional unit of the nervous system
sensory neuron
transmit impulses form sense organs and receptors
interneuron
make up the brain and spinal chord
motor neuron
carry impulses from interneurons to skeletal and visceral muscles and glands
nerve
groups/bundles of the axons of sensory and/or motor neurons
central nervous system (CNS)
includes brain and spinal chord
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
includes the nerves and sense receptors
somatic
part of PNS - concerned with external environment
autonomic
part of PNS - concerned with internal environment
reflex arc
carries out simple, quick, and automatic responses to certain stimuli - touching a hot stove
spinal cord
extends from the brain downward and is enclosed by the bones of vertebrate column (spine)
brain
divided into three areas - protected by cranium
cerebrum
largest portion of brain - complex and high level thinking - conscious and voluntary actions are controlled here - speech, vision, hearing, memory
cerebellum
located behind cerebrum - responsible for muscle coordination and balance
brain stem/medulla
controls basic homeostatic functions such as body temperature, blood pressure, and breathing
