Regions of the abdomen and their contents Flashcards
The abdomen can be described based on what
9 regions
4 quadrants
The abdomen is divided into 9 regions by
4 imaginary planes; 2 vertical and 2 horizontal.
The 2 vertical lines correspond to what
Mid clavicular line on both sides
Extent of the vertical lines
They extend between the mid clavicular lines to a point on the inguinal ligament midway between ASIS to pubic symphysis.
The horizontal planes are also called
transpyloric planes
Extent of the transpyloric plane
It extends midway between the jugular or suprasternal notch and pubic symphysis.
It then passes through the pylorus of the stomach and corresponds to the lower border of L1 and the trans tubercular plane.
Transtubercular plane passes through what
It passes through the tubercles
of the iliac crest and the body of the L5 vertebrae.

Clinical importance of the regions and quadrants
They are important in describing the location of viscera, location of pain, swellings and incisions in the abdomen
