Regenerative Perio Flashcards
What are examples of regenerative techniques?
Bone substitutes
Guided tissue regeneration
Growth factors and biologics
Grafting and combined therapies
What are 3 ways bone substitutes?
Bone forming cells = osteogeneisis
Scaffold cells = osteoconductive
Bone inducing = osteoinduction
Types of bone substitutes?
Bone autogenous Bone allograft Bone xenograft Bone alloplastic material Bioactive glass
What is bone autogenous graft?
Autograft
Bone taken from elsewhere pt body
What is bone allograft?
Use of bone tissue from donar
What is done xenograft?
Use of bone tissue from another species
What is alloplastic graft?
Hydroxyapatite
Substance found in bone
What is Bio-Oss?
Bone xenograft
Bio-Oss = bovine porous bone mineral
How does Bio-Oss work?
Causes clot stabilisation –> revasularisation and migration of osteoblast –> growth of woven bone enhance by scaffold of BioOss
Bone integration
How to use Bio-Glass?
Introduce into defect site –> react w/ body fluids
Modified surface bioglass induces tissue regeneration
Why is guided tissue regeneration used in perio?
Used to prevent epithelial migration along cement wall of pocket
What is GTR?
Placing a membrane barrier to cover bone and PDL - separates bone and PDL from gingival epithelium
Prevents epithelial migration favouring repopulation by cells PDL/bone
Basic technique of GTR?
Surgical flap
Membrane inserted
Suture into position
What kind of membranes are used?
Resorbable
Prevents second surgery which could damage newly formed tissue
Example of growth factor/biolpgical?
Enamel matrix derivatives = Emdogain
