Regenerative Grazing Flashcards
Regenerative Agriculture
Focuses on soil structure and organic matter through rotation, minimal tillage, agroforestry, and cover cropping.
What is encouraging this shift?
Uk Environmental Land Management Scheme, financially awarding environmental stewardship
Regenerative Agriculture Sequestration Potential
3-8 MtCO2 per year, accounting 1-2% of UK’s current annual emissions
Limits to CO2 sequestration…
Steady state after some time, with diminishing returns.
Problems with soil measurements…
Carbon soil seasonal and environmental flucutations, thus measurements consistent/short scale.
How are GHG expressed?
CO2 equivalents using GWP
What does CO2eq represent?
Equality of integrated radiative forcing of one emission pulse over a lifetime.
What is an example of GWP being a poor measurement?
CH4 has 120 times more impact in first year after emission, with shorter perturbation time.
What does CO2eq neglect?
Contribution of emission pulse of a gas to radiative forcing at certain points in time, masking end point of emissions impact, and temporal differences in GHG lifetime.
What does GWP* do?
Capture difference between long and short-lived GHG, relating one off CO2 release to changing rate of CH4 emissions.
Why might this perturb livestock emissions?
Stable livestock/CH4 mean CH4 nearly 0, inconsiderate of additional warming under a constant level of CH4 emissions.
Global grazing impacts on carbon…
Meta analysis of 1,473 show reduced soil carbon stocks at 1m depth by 46 PgC over past 60 years.
