Regan’s speech

metal juxtaposes with
metal imagery
malleable

caesura or enjambment?
type of atmosphere

What do they have to live for?
context of 17th century

A

I am made of that ‘self mettle’ - same substance, idea of ‘mettle’ - substance juxtaposes the reality of her superficial love which lacks any depth and meaning or real substance

Monetary imagery reinforces the idea of love as a transaction or a commodity. Also suggests malleable quality to her character; easily alters persona to suit her circumstance.

cyclical - ends with ‘love’
‘in my true heart…. I find she names my very deed of love’ - enjambment
perfunctory (without real interest) atmosphere

They have nothing to live for other than no self interest - society falls apart when this happens

17th century beginning of a capitalist society - citizens are competing with one another over self interest

Q

Regan describing Lear

he hath…

A

he hath ever but slenderly known himself.

(France and Cordelia have just left and Goneril and Regan are bitching about their dad - he has never understood his own feelings very well)

Introducing Lear’s fatal flaw; inability to see himself clearly
REGAN makes this observation - villains and yet we sympathise with them as they rein in their wrathful father

Q

Regan to Lear

You should be…

A

You should be ruled and led
(U should let others take care of you and submit to those who know better what to do than you)

AO3
Gerontocracy (ruled by older generation)
Emerging capitalism - rise of younger generations

Idea of the younger generation taking care of the old/ fear about children kicking out parents? Reversal of roles, place in social hierarchy dependent upon material possessions (e.g. land), extent of court politics and flattery because true intentions and beliefs are only revealed after Lear has nothing to give, value is material, Lear as weak and vulnerable, play on the old man, abdication gives up all claim to authority so therefore power is not inherent but lies in wealth
