Consequences on lives of refugees
Refugees have to change there lifestyle and adapt to the new change, for example moving to a new house and living in a new area with little knowledge can be overwhelming and can have social consequences
Economic Consequences on neighbouring states - National scale
Nationally, the country will gain skills and knowledge. However, this can build pressures to build infrastructure and provide services provision
Economic Consequences on neighbouring states - local scale
+ increased demand for goods/ services
+ Remittances from abroad( can also enhance inequalities)
- Pressure on grazing/ firewood
- Drives down labour costs locally (but benefits local entrepreneurs
Social consequences on neighbouring states
- -Can exacerbate racial/ cultural tensions
- -Tensions created if refugees believed to be unfairly benefiting at expense of host community - can be reduced of international funding targets both
- -gender based violence
- -gender relations affected; women can take mens job meaning reduced access to employment for men
political and security consequences on neighbouring states
Rebel social networks can expand allowing for arms, combatants and ideologies conducive to conflict to spread across international borders
This can lead to the create of bilateral tensions where non- existed before, e.g involvement of Tamil refugees in the assassination of Indian prime minister Rajiv Ghandi in 1991
violence can increase as a result
Environmental consequences on neighbouring states
-increased pressure on land, water and natural resources
-growth of slums with poor waste/ sewage treatment
Larger camps can also slow the development of sustainable practices, such as less intensive agriculture or use of water saving techniques
all of these can therefore have vert long-lasting impacts
