Refractive Index Flashcards
1
Q
What is refraction caused by?
A
It is when waves change direction as they enter a different medium. Caused by the change in density of the mediums.
2
Q
What happens to a wave when it slows down?
A
It bends toward the normal.
3
Q
How do you work out refractive index?
A
n=sin i/ sin r. I= ANGLE OF INCIDENCE, R=ANGLE OF REFRACTION
4
Q
How do you work out the critical angle?
A
sin c=1/n (n= refractive index)
5
Q
What is critical angle?
A
When light hits a boundary at an angle above the critical it is refracted so much, the ray reflects inside the substance.
6
Q
What is total internal reflection?
A
Occurs when light hits a boundary at an angle that is higher than the critical angle.
