Refractive errors of eye Flashcards
What do refractive errors do?
cause diminished visual acuity
What is myopia commonly known as?
short-sightedness
How will someone with myopia’s vision be affected?
will not be able to focus on distant objects
Where is the light focussed relative to the retina in myopia?
in front of the retina
What are the anatomical irregularities associated with myopia?
cornea too curved or eyeball too long
What type of lens is used to correct myopia?
concave lens
What is hyperopia commonly known as?
long-sightedness
How will someone with hyperopia’s vision be affected?
will not be able to focus on nearby objects
Where is light focussed relative to the retina in hyperopia?
behind the retina
What are the anatomical irregularities associated with hyperopia?
cornea too shallow or eyeball too short
What type of lens is used to treat hyperopia?
convex lens
What is astigmatism?
a condition where the shape of the cornea is irregular- this leads to light being refracted differently in different parts of the eye
How will someone with astigmatism’s vision be affected?
they will find it difficult to see objects at any distance
What type of lens is used to treat astigmatism?
cylindrical
