Refraction + Waves Crossing Boundaries Flashcards
Refraction
When a wave changes its direction due to hitting a boundary
If a wave speeds up then it moves…
away from the normal
If a wave slows down then it moves…
towards the normal
What does it mean when a wave has been reflected?
It has bounced off back to where it came from
What does it mean when a wave has been refracted?
It passes through the new material but changes the direction through which it’s moving
What does it mean when a wave has been absorbed?
It has been taken in by the new material and its energy has been transferred to that new material
What does it mean when a wave has been transmitted?
It has gone through the new material without being absorbed or reflected and keeps on travelling
