Refraction of light Flashcards
Refraction
The change in speed of light as it passes from one medium to another
(e.g. from air to glass).
What happens to the speed of light as it travels from air into glass?
The speed of light in glass is slower than the speed of light in air.
In the diagram below, identify the normal, the angle of incidence and the angle refraction?
Normal dashed line at 90° to block.
Angle of incidence is between the arrow going in and the normal (outside block).
Angle of refraction is between the arrow going through and the normal (inside block).
What happens to a light ray as it travels from air into glass?
Slows down and move towards the normal.
What happens to white light when it passes thrown a triangular prism?
The light refracts and produces a spectrum.
