refraction Flashcards
what is the relationship between wavefront and rays?
rays are perpendicular to wavefront
what are the two types of wavefront?
. circular wavefront
. plane wavefront
what is refraction?
. the wave changes direction as it enters a different medium.
. the change of direction is a result of wave slowing down or speeding up
. bending of light
why does wavefront tilt?
. wavefront has been tilted because of uneven slowing as it crosses the air-glass interference
what is the equation of refractive index?
refractive index = speed of light in a vacuum/velocity of light in that medium
what is the speed of light in a vacuum?
300000000 m/s
what is snells law?
n sin i = n' sin i' n= incident index n'= refractive index i = incident angle i' = refracted angle
what happens when light travels from air to glass?
glass has a higher refractive index than air light slows down and moves towards the normal
what happens when light travels to a medium that has a higher refractive index?
light moves towards the normal
what are some applications for refraction?
. correcting squints
. dispersion
. displacement
what is dispersion?
splitting of beam of white light into seven constituent colours when passed through a transparent medium
