what is the reformation
A movement in Europe to change the Christian
Church.
what is meant by catholic
The main/ traditional branch of Christianity
before 1500.
what is meant by protestant
A Branch of Christianity that emerged after 1500
in protest at corruption in the Catholic church.
church of England
English branch of Christianity established in the
1500s. The monarch was the head of the
church.
what is meant by pope
The head of the Catholic church. He was
based in the Vatican, in Rome and was one of
the most powerful people on the planet.
martin luther
A German (Catholic) Monk who wrote a list of complaints against the Catholic Church.
95 thesis
Martin Luther’s list of complaints about the
Catholic Church- this started the Reformation.
act of supremacy
a law passed from henry the eight making him the head of the church of England.
henry the eight
a Tudor king that ruled in the 1500s and changed the religions of the country.
Catherine of Aragon
Henry VIII’s 1st wife. Originally a Spanish princess
she was a strict Catholic.

she was henry the eighths second wife and she was raised by a protestant

Henry VIII’s second daughter. She ruled after the
death of Mary in 1558 until her death in 1603

Someone who is executed (usually burned to
death) for their religious beliefs.
virgin mary
Central icon of the Catholic Church and mother
of Jesus. Churches were filled with statues and
images of her.
catholic bible
Traditional translation of the Bible. In the 1500s
these were in Latin.
protestant bible
Translation of the bible by the Protestant church
into the language of the country (e.g. English).
stained glass window
Very expensive/ decorative windows found in
Catholic Churches. These meant to glorify the
church/ god.
corruption
Misuse of power or money, usually for individual
gain.
primary source
A source of information created at the time of the
event (e.g. a letter/ official records etc.)
secondary source
A source of information created after the event,
often from studying a lot of different primary
sources.
provence
The information about where a source of
information has come from (who created it and
why etc.)
usefull utility
How useful a source is to answering a question- not
to be confused with how reliable/ trustworthy a
source is.
