Reflexes Flashcards
reflexes
involuntary movements that require no conscious thought
monosynaptic circuit (one sensory neutron - one motor neuron)
entered around spinal cord (spinal nerves) and brainstem(cranial nerves)
monosynaptic pathway
one chemical synapse
e.g one sensory neutron : one motor neurone e.g reflexes
reflex pathway components
stimulus receptor sensory neuron synapse motor neuron effector response
describe the pharyngeal reflex (gag reflex)
mechanoreceptors detect touch in the posterior part of the tongue, soft palate
stimulates sensory fibres of glossopharyngeal nerve
results in mass contraction of both sides of the pharyngeal and posterior oral musculature
salivary reflex
some reflexes involve glands
taste, visual aids and chewing forces all increase salivary flow
