reflexes Flashcards
1
Q
monosynaptic vs polysynaptic reflexes contain which neurones? functions?
A
mono and poly have afferent and efferent neurones.
Poly also has interneurons
mono for simple reflex arcs
ploy for higher cognitive function and voluntary movement
2
Q
what is the function of muscle spindle (stretch) reflex ?
A
- keep muscle at consent length and prevent overstretching
- quickly and automatically adjust muscle tension in response to changes in muscle length
3
Q
A
- Muscle undergoes stretch, activating muscle spindles (sensory receptors)
- Sensory neurons transmit stretch information to the spinal cord.
- mono reflex arc: Direct synapse between sensory neurons and alpha motor neurons.
- Alpha motor neurons stimulate stretched muscle, inhibiting antagonist muscles
- Rapid contraction prevents overstretching, maintaining muscle length.
- Contributes to postural stability and coordinated movements.
- Often part of larger reflex loops, including reciprocal inhibition and inverse stretch reflex.
