Reflex definition
An automatic, patterned response to a sensory stimulus
Reflexes categorized into 4 groups
Spinal or cranial–spine or brain
Somatic or autonomic–skeletal muscle or smooth muscle, cardiac or glands
Innate (inborn) or continued (learned)–born with it or develop
Monosynaptic or polysynaptic–2 neurons and 1 synapse or more than 2 neurons and multiple synapses
Withdrawal reflex
Body is subjected to painful stimuli and withdraws automatically
Crossed-extensor reflex
Painful stimulus triggers withdrawal reflex, the crossed-extensor reflex is also triggered.
(Stepped on a nail) this reflex controls opposite leg to maintain balance and withdrawal reflex removes from the foot from the nail
Inhibitory interneurons
Suppress activity in neurons that control withdrawal reflex
Stretch reflex
Knee jerk
