Reflex Arc Flashcards
Receptor Description
Site of stimulus action, receptor end of dendrite or special cell in receptor organ
Receptor Function
Responds to some change in internal or external environment.
Sensory Neuron Description
Afferent Neuron, cell body is in ganglion outside CNS; axon extends into CNS
Sensory Neuron Function
Transmits nerve impulses from receptor to CNS.
Integration Center Description
Always within CNS; in simplest reflexes it consists of synapse between motor and sensory neurons, more commonly one or more interneurons are involved
Integration Center Function
Process Center; region in CNS where incoming sensory impulses generate appropriate outgoing motor impulses.
Motor Neuron Description
Efferent Neuron; dendrites and cell body are in CNS; axon extends to periphery
Motor Neuron Function
Transmits nerve impulses from integration center in CNS to effector organ
Effector Description
Muscle or gland outside CNS
Effector Function
Responds to impulses from motor neuron to produce an action such as contraction or secretion.
