Reflex and Sensory Testing Flashcards
what is the purpose of sensory testing?
determines the boundaries of a sensory legion, sensory integrity and its effects on motor output, and assures patient safety to prevent secondary complications
dorsal root contains:
afferent sensory fibers
ventral root contains:
efferent motor fibers
define: dermatome
area of skin innervated by a single nerve root
define: myotome
group of muscles innervated by a single nerve root
sensory deficits are detected by body comparisons of:
CL side and prox/dist regions of same side
what is the position of choice for sensory testing:
supine
Describe the test for light touch
Instruct patient to say yes as soon as stimulus is felt; touch cotton to skin and do not wipe; ask do you feel the pressure now (A) or now (B) test both sides and then proximal and distal to find normal areas
what is the score scale for light touch and pinprick?
0 is absent, 1 is impaired, and 2 is normal
what nerve roots are used in sensory testing?
C2-8, T1, L1-5, and S1-2
testing location for C2
behind ear
testing location for C3
anterior neck just above collar bone
testing location for C4
near acromion
testing location for C5
lateral arm near cubital fossa
testing location for C6
posterior thumb
testing location for C7
posterior middle finger
testing location for C8
posterior pinky finger
testing location for T1
medial arm near cubital fossa
