Reflector, layered lighting system Flashcards
probably the most important elements in the construction of luminaires for controlling light.
reflectors
a type of luminaire that is direct light predominantly downwards
Downlights
combine a downlight and an up light in one fixture. These luminaires are applied for the simultaneous lighting of floor and ceiling or for grazing lighting over a wall surface
up-downlights
a system where light sources are shielded by a panel parallel to the wall and attached to the ceiling to distribute light downwards over the wall.
Cornice lighting
a system where light sources are shielded by a ledge to distribute light upwards over the ceiling and upper wall. It is a form of indirect lighting
Cove lighting
a system where light sources are shielded by a panel parallel to the wall usually across the top of a window. This provides light both upwards and downwards over the wall.
valance lighting
A framework for understanding composition and achieving aesthetics in lighting design
Layered lighting system
-Overall lighting
-provides light for visual recognition
-to support convenient occupant circulation
Ambient lighting
-Used in Museums and Boutique Stores
- Low, to create significant contrast with the display and to heighten drama
Dramatic lighting
- For Reading, Writing, Chopping– Surroundings not less than 1/3 of work surface
Task lighting
- illuminate features; displays such as artwork, architectural features, retail display
- Draw attention to favorite objects or points of interest
Focal lighting
- More decorative than functional
- like jewelry; ornamental
- Chandelier, Sconce, Lantern, Pendant
- Not suitable for task
decorative / accent lighting

bright bluish light
the device which supports the source or sources of electric light and redirects or helps to control the light rays from the source
Luminaire (or lighting fixtures)
designed for linear light sources such as fluorescent lamps or compact fluorescent lamps. Their name derives from their anti-dazzle attachments that may be anti-glare louvres, light controlling specular reflectors or prismatic diffusers
louvered luminaires
illuminate walls and depending on how they are designed – also a part of the floor.
wall washers
are designed for brightening or lighting ceilings and for indirect ambient lighting. They are installed above eye height on the wall or suspended from the ceiling.
ceiling wash light
the most common form of movable luminaires. They illuminate a limited area, with the result that they are rarely used for ambient lighting but predominantly for accent lighting
Spotlight
illumination is diffused through a prismatic lens or reflected off surface
coffered light panels
isolated squares, continuous light strips, or luminous ceiling
Flush light panels
suspended fixtures may provide direct or semi illumination. Can lower the apparent ceiling height of a space
Surface mounted or suspended luminaires
