Reflection & Refraction Flashcards
What happens when something is refracted ?
When something is refracted the light slows down and changes direction. This makes it appear bent
What Happens to the wavelength and frequency of light when entering water?
The wavelength decreases so therefore so does the frequency. The speed also decreases
What happens when light is reflected from a plane mirror?
Rats stay at the same speed, frequency and wavelength when reflected
Properties of a plane mirror
Image is: Upright Virtual The same Same distance behind Laterally inverted
What is an echo and how do you apply this in a maths problem?
An ego is a reflected sound wave
If a sound wave has to travel there and back in a problem, always multiply answer by 2
Which colour is refracted the least and has the longest wavelength?
Red light
Which light is refracted the most and has the shortest wavelength?
Violet light
That happens to light when travelling from air to glass?
Light bends towards the normal
Angle of refraction is smaller than the angle of incidence
What happens when light travels from glass to air?
Light bends away from the normal
Angle of refraction is greater than the angle of incidence
What are the primary colours of light?
Green, red and blue
What are the secondary colours of light?
Yellow (green+red)
Magenta (blue+red)
Cyan (blue+green)
Definition of transparent
Object that transmits all the incident light which enters it
Definition of translucent
Object with at allows light to pass through it but becomes scattered or refracted
Definition of opaque
Object which light can’t pass through
