Reflection of Light Flashcards
Define reflection
The change in direction of a wavefont at an interface between two different media so that the wavefont returns to the media it originated from
Mirror
Define the center of curvature
The center of a sphere of which the mirror is a part of
Mirror
Define radius of curvature
The radius of the sphere of which the mirror is a part of
Mirror
What is aperture
The reflecting surface of a mirror
The midpoint of the reflecting surface of a spherical mirror is called
Pole
Mirror
What is the focus plain
Rays of light coming from infinity get focused on a plane perpendicular to the principal axis.
Mirror Formula
1/f = 1/v + 1/u
Magnification Formula (Height Method)
m = h’ / h
m = Magnification
h’ = Image height
h = Object height
Magnification Formula (Distance Method)
m = -v / u
m = Magnification
v = Image distance
u = Object distance
New Cartesian Sign Convention (for Mirrors)
- Distance are measured considering the Pole of the mirror as the Orgin(O)
- Those measured to the right from O are positive and those in the opposite direction are negatiive
- Distance measured upwards the principal axis are positive and those downwards are negative. The incident rayis to be considered as travelling from left to right
f =
uv/u+v
m = hi/ho =?
Use u and v
hi = height of image
ho - hight of object
-v/u
What is the relation between the angle between the mirror and the number of images
n = (360/θ)-1
n = Number of images formed
θ = Angle between the two mirrors
What is scattered reflection
When light falls on arough surface, it undergose an irregular reflection
Identify the mirror which always forms virutal and diminished image
Convex mirror
