reflection of light Flashcards

1
Q

what is the difference between regular and irregular reflection?

A

Regular reflection is when the entire beam is reflected in only One Direction. This type of reflection occurs on a smooth surface.

Irregular reflection on the other hand is also called diffuse reflection it occurs on an uneven surface and they get and the rays get reflected in different directions.

Q

What does the first law of reflection state?

A

The first law of reflections states that the angle of incidence will always be equal to the angle of reflection.

Q

What is lateral inversion?

A

Lateral inversion is a property of a plain mirror in which there is an interchange of left and right this means that in the mirror if we raise our left hand the reflection in the mirror will raise its right hand.

Q

State the characteristics of an image formed by a plain mirror.

A

The characteristics of an image found by the plane mirror are as follows
1. The image formed is erect
2. The image is of the same size as the object
3. The image is laterally inverted that is right side of the object appears as the left side of the image
4.The image is as far behind the mirror as the object is in front of it
5.The image formed is virtual that is it cannot be caught on a screen and there is no actual meeting of the light rays which is incident and reflected.

Q

What is the phenomenon of multiple reflections?

A

When we get many images of an object because the image formed by one mirror acts as the object of the 2nd mirror and therefore further images of a single image are formed this continues till no more reflection of either of the images is possible. this phenomenon is referred to as multiple reflections.

Q

What is a kaleidoscope? what principle is it based on?

A

The principle of forming multiple images by mirrors at an angle to each other is used in a toy called a Kaleidoscope. It consists of three plane mirrors inclined at an angle of 60 degrees to each other. The arrangement is kept in a cylindrical cardboard box with a few pieces of colored glass on one end. When the Kaleidoscope is faced toward sunlight and rotated it forms beautiful geometrical patterns which can be seen from the other end.

Q

List the uses of plain mirrors.

A

There are many verses of clean mirrors in our daily lives. Number one we commonly use plain mirrors in our homes to look at our reflection. In beauty parlors, plain mirrors are kept at an angle so we can see this side of our head and the back of our head plain mirrors are used to reflect light on an object for example when during the shooting of film metal sheets are used as plain mirrors to reflect sunlight on the actors they are also used in solar cookers
They are also used in periscopes from a submarine under the sea a sailor can see objects and enemy ships on the surface of the sea using a periscope.

Q

How do we find the number of images formed by mirrors which are kept at a certain angle?

A

We can find the number of images formed by mirrors which are kept at a certain angle by using a simple formula which is as follows:
n=(360/angle given) - 1
