Discuss how an individual’s ill health might impact their education
- Missed days at school / uni
- May not be able to concentrate/ work to their full ability due to worrying about their condition
- They may have to leave school / uni which may impact their qualifications / career prospects
- May be bullied at school for being ill / seen as different by other students
Discuss how an individual’s ill health may impact their employment
- May not be able to get a job / hold down a job
- May face discrimination in employment
- May find employment stressful
- May find it difficult to work with others or with the public eg someone with mental health problems
- May be forced to take time off work from the job eg to attend health appointments to through ill health
- May not be able to gain promotion in their job due to time off / ill health
- Self employment is difficult/ pressure to make an income
Discuss how an individual’s ill health may impact their income
- May have a reduced income due to having to give up work / cut down hours etc
- May gain income from state benefits eg DLA or incapacity benefit
- May have to pay for holistic treatments / alternative therapies / private health care which will reduce disposable income
- Hidden costs eg car parking, fuel, food and childcare
Discuss how an individual’s ill health may effect their leisure activities
- The individual may not be able to continue with certain sports / activities due to their ill health eg someone with MS may not be able to play football
- Due to reduced income they may not be able to afford certain luxury leisure activities eg golf fees
- Individuals may not feel motivated to partake in leisure activities due to low self esteem etc
- They may have more free time to take up a new hobby or interest eg gardening, cooking
Discuss how an individual’s ill health may effect their relationships
- They may have fewer relationships because they may lose contact with friends and colleagues because they go out less / no longer go to work
- Some relationships may be strengthened eg with family or close friends because they need and appreciate them more
- Illness may put a strain on relationships with partner and children. May resent how they have to depend on them and they may feel that their lives are being adversed affected by the illness.
- The nature of relationships can change eg children become carers
- May affect sexual relationships with a partner
Discuss how an individuals ill health may effect their families education
- Children may be worried and lose concentration at school, which could affect their educational achievement
- Parents may be less able to support children with their homework
- May have some time to spend on children’s education as they may be at home much more
- May miss school if the parent becomes very ill
- May be bullied at school about a relative being different
- If the family income is reduced due to illness, paying for educational costs may be problematic. Eg a child may miss out on school trips
- Other adults continuing education may be negatively effected eg may have to give up postgraduate studies they may be undertaking
Discuss how an individual’s ill health will effect their families employment
- Adults employment may be affected because they have to stay off work and look after an ill member of the family
- Days off to care for the family member or time off for their medical appointments could affect their chances of promotion
- May have to consider cutting down or giving up work
Discuss how an individuals ill health may effect their families income
- If the ill family member has to leave work due to illness, the family may have to depend on state benefits=loss of income
- Other members might have to give up work or doing overtime because of their commitment to caring for a relative= loss of income
- Opportunities to increase income for the family may be lost eg neither parent may feel able to go for promotion at work due to the illness
- May be cost involved in accessing care eg travel for treatment, high number of prescriptions etc
Discuss how an individual’s ill health may effect their families leisure activities
- The family may not be able to engage in leisure activities as a family group as they did previously
- They may have to give up their own leisure activities eg membership of clubs due to transport problems or reduced income
- The ill family member may not be available to support children in maintaining their leisure activities eg cannot attend football matches to cheer on their child
- Family members may change to different activities that they can do at home so they don’t have to leave the ill member eg arts and crafts instead of team sport activities
Discuss how an individual’s ill health may effect their families relationships
- Family members may argue due to stress and tension in the family caused by worrying about a member if they become ill
- Family members may spend less time with their own friends due to member’s ill health and this may cause them to lose contact with some of their friends
- Family members relationships may break down eg if they have to spend time helping to care for a sick parent, they may be unable to sustain a relationship with a girlfriend/ boyfriend
- Family relationships may become closer as they support each other in caring for the ill family member
