Reductionism V Holism Flashcards
What is it?
Levels of detail approriate to describe human behaviour
Reductionism
behaviour best explained by breaking down into constituent parts
Biological reductionism
attempting to explain behaviour by basis of genetic/ biochemical explanations
Biological reductionism e.g.
Sz, gender + agression genetic explanations
Environmental reductionism
explaining behaviour as a result of stimulus-response links
product of the environment
Environmental reductionism e.g.
Differential association
Machine reductionism
experience is like a machine
Machine reductionism e.g.
WMM and MSM
psychodynamic reductionism
reduces behaviour to unconscious motivation and early childhood experience
Psychodynamic reductionism e.g.
Freud’s idea that a weak superego is a reason for offending
Reductionism AO3 + scientific
- can easily operationalise variables
- can conduct in objective and relaible way
Reductionism AO3 - only forms part of explanation
explanation as gene levels doesn’t suggest situation behaviour occurs
Holism
looking at entire person to understand human behaviour
Gestalism
the whole being is greater than its parts
Holism AO3 +
some behaviours only show in group situations e.g. conformity
