Reducing the risks of CVD Flashcards
2 kinds of medication for high blood pressure
DIURETICS and ANTIHYPERTENSIVES
2 kinds of antihypertensives
ACE inhibitors and Calcium channel blockers
what does ACE inhibitors stand for
it stands for good health and justice and… no joking it stands for Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor
what do ACE inhibitors do
ANGIOTENSIN is a HORMONE relating to VASOCINSTRICTION so ACE inhibitors inhibit enzyme which converts angiotensin resulting in less vasoconstriction and lower blood pressure I guess
side effects of ACE inhibitors
DIZZY, cough, reduced kidney function
what do calcium channel blockers do
block Ca+ channels in muscles of artery (so calcium ions cannot be deposited)
Side effects of calcium channel blockers
DIZZY, headache, abnormal heart rhythm, DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HAVE HEART FAILURE
what do diuretics do
increase URINATION- rid body of excess fluid and salt- lower blood plasma volume and cardiac output
side effects of diuretics
DIZZY, muscle cramps, nausea
what medication reduces blood cholesterol
STATINS
what do statins do
inhibit enzyme used to produce LDL
side effects of statins
higher risk of gastrointestinal and respiratory CANCER
2 types of medication to reduce blood clots
ANTICOAGULENTS and PLATELET INHIBITORY DRUGS
2 platelet inhibitory drugs
aspirin and clopidogrel
what does aspirin do
reduces stickiness of platelets
