reducing field samples of hma to testing size Flashcards
before sample reduction
the field sample of hma should be heated until a temp that allows easy separation of particlces is attained. hma should not be reheated more than necessary
sample preparation method 1
square scoop place sample in mixing pan that prevents sample loss or addition of foreign material. mix the material thoroughly by turning the entire sample over 3 times. flatten sample to uniform depth it should be the same or lower than the sides of the scoop
sample preparation method 2
place the can containing the sample into the mixing pan so rim is flat on bottom of pan. lift can 1 in off the bottom. move can in circular motion distribute material in 3 layers if visible segregation mix material thoroughly by turning entire sample over onto itself using scoop
method A selection by scoop
using square scoop and putty knife obtain sample for each test scoop the full depth a putty knife can be used to separate material in the scoop from whats in the pan and also from main body of the scoop. do not shake scoop to add small amounts of material to specimen
method b quartering
divide mixture into 4 equal quarters with a square scoop and remove two diagaonally opposite quarters including all fine material. continue process until sample is reduced to desired size
method c mechanical splitter
splitter should have an even number of of equal width chutes not less than 8 for coarse aggregate or 12 for fine.
