reducing air pollution Flashcards
describe the liming process
lakes which have been affected by acid rain is psprayed with powdered limestone or chalk (calcium carbonate) to neutralise the acid in the water
how does catalytic converters work
inside the catalytic converters, there are transition metals like platinum and rhodium which converts poisonous gases into harmless ones.
hot exhaust gases become…
CO2 H2O N2
carbon monoxide is oxidised to carbon dioxide
2CO + O2 > 2CO2
nitrogen oxide reduced to nitrogen
2NO + 2CO > N2 + 2CO2
why doesn’t the catalytic converter solve all pollution problems
the catalytic converters change CO to CO2 which is still a greenhouse gas
what is another name for waste gas
flue gas
two ways to minimise the effects of sulfur dioxide pollution
- remove first- remove sulfur from ff before burning. lowers the amount of sulfur dioxide released into the atmosphere. (too expensive and difficult)
- flue gas desulfurisation
remove from waste gases formed when fossil fuels undergo combustion(cheaper)—-spray calcium carbonate or chalk ( calcium oxide) onto the flue gas to produce CO2 and air
explain flue gas desulfurisation + equation of sulfur dioxide react with calcium carbonate to form calcium sulfite
CaCO3 + SO2 > CaSO3 + CO2
equation of calcium sulfite further oxidised to calcium sulfate
2CaSO3 + O2 > 2CaSO4
