Redshift and Hubble's law Flashcards
What is redshift?
When viewing distant stars they may appear red in colour if the star is rapidly moving away from us.
What is blueshift?
When viewing distant stars they may appear blue in colour if the star is rapidly moving towards us.
What is redshift dependent on?
How fast the star is moving away from us
When would redshift be negative?
When stars are moving away from us.
What equation can be used to find redshift?
Redshift is the change in wavelength to the emitted wavelength.
What equation can be used to find redshift at low relative speeds (less than 10% of the speed of light)
What is Hubble’s law?
Galaxies in space are moving away from Earth at velocities proportional to their distance away from the Earth.
What are the two conclusions from Hubble’s law?
- Most galaxies are receding from us (Earth)
- The recessional velocity increases with distance.
What equation is used for Hubble’s law?
What equation can be used to estimate the age of the universe?
What is Hubble’s constant?
2.34x10-18s-1
What is the estimated age of the universe using Hubble’s law?
14 billion years
What are the units for redshift?
There is no unit.
