REDOX Reactions & Cells Flashcards
Electrolyte
chemical compound that allows the flow of electric charge within a cell
Half-equation
one of two equations (oxidation or reduction) which describes one half of a redox reaction
Oxidant (Oxidising Agent)
species that oxidises another substance and is itself reduced
Oxidation
chemical reaction where a species increases its oxidation number by losing electrons
Oxidation Number
number assigned to an element, representing the number of electrons lost or gained by an atom of that element to form a chemical bond with another species
Oxidised
a substance that has lost electrons +/ hydrogen, or has gained oxygen
Reductant (Reducing Agent)
species that reduces another substance and is itself oxidised
Reduced
a substance that has gained electrons +/ hydrogen, or has lost oxygen
Reduction
chemical reaction where a species decreases its oxidation number by gaining electrons
