redox Flashcards
definition, things to note and refreshers of methods to balance half eqns
1
Q
oxidation number
A
in covalently bonded atoms, it is the charge the atom would possess if the shared electrons were completely transferred to the more electronegative atom
2
Q
electronegativity
A
measure of an atom’s ability to attract the shared paired of electrons in a covalent bond towards itself
3
Q
top most electronegative atoms
A
F>O>Cl>N
C≈H
4
Q
acidic medium constructing eqn to balance atoms and charges
A
- skeletal ionic half eqns for 2 reactants ( [O] and [R] )
- balance number of atoms
3a. Balance O by adding H2O on the other side
3b. Balance hydrogen (from all compounds) by adding H+ on the ither side - Balance charges by adding e- for each half eqn
- combine eqn by equating e-
5
Q
alkaline and neutral medium constructing eqn to balance atoms and charges
A
- skeletal ionic half eqns for 2 reactants ( [O] and [R] )
- balance number of atoms
3a. Balance O by adding H2O on the other side
3b. Balance hydrogen (from all compounds) by adding H+ on the ither side
* 3c. neutralise all H+ with OH- on both sides - Balance charges by adding e- for each half eqn
- combine eqn by equating e-
