Redox Flashcards
Electrochemistry (redox):
The study of electron transfer.
What is reduction?
The process of producing a metal from a metal compound.
(U get a “reduced” amount of metal.)
What is oxidation?
The process of producing a metal compound from a metal.
(The reverse of reduction)
What is an oxidizing agent?
It is what helps make oxidation happen.. by getting reduced.
What is a reducing agent?
It is a chemical species which causes REDUCTION to take place… in another compound.
MEANING it gets OXIDIZED :)
Can a reduction or a oxidation reaction happen without the other?
No it can’t.
(they can be shown alone tho)
Does a reduction reaction want to give or take electrons?
It wants to TAKE.
(Reduction Is Gain)
Does an oxidation reaction want to give or take electrons?
It wants to GIVE electrons.
(Oxidation Is Losing)
Does a reducing AGENT want to give or take electrons?
Since the AGENT is OXIDIZING , it will GIVE electrons.
Will an oxidizing agent want to give or take electrons?
The AGENT is reducing, so it will TAKE electrons.
The 5 steps to writing half reactions:
1) Write the two things that change
2) Balance the elements
3) Balance e-
4) Label half reactions as RED or OX!
5) Label OA and RA.
Metal —-> Metal compound is..?
Oxidation!
Metal compound —-> Metal is ?
REDUCTION.
Which side of the equation are electrons found in REDUCTION?
REACTANTS (left) side.
Which side of the equation are electrons found in OXIDATION?
PRODUCTS (right) side.
