Redemption In The Bible Flashcards
Jesus the example
Jesus knew how much suffering his crucifixion would cause him,but he still went through with it.Through showing total obedience to God, Jesus set an example for all people to follow
Jesus the restorer
Jesus restored the relationship between God and humanity.Mark 15 tells how in Jerusalem after Jesus’ death in the Holy temple the beil ) that separates the holiest part of the church to the rest) split in two.Showing how Jesus broke the barrier between God and humanity
Jesus the victor
Jesus experienced pain, suffering and death.By bringing the presence of God with him he was able to be victorious over them
Jesus the victor ( Jesus made possible )
For all people to share in the defeat of suffering and death
John 20 1-18 When Jesus appeared to Mary she didn’t recognise him immediately.
Suggests Jesus although physically pressnt was different. He had entered a new creation.
This reflects idea that redemption changed creation making it more perfect
Acts 1 : 6-11 Before Jesus ascended into heaven he told the disciples that they would be his witnesses to the end of the earth
The disciples were witnesses to Jesus’ redeeming work on earth.
Jesus expected the disciples to continue to spread his teachings after he was gone,so everyone could share in his redemption
Acts 1 :6- 11 After Jesus ascended into heaven two angels told the disciples that he will return
Jesus will complete the redemption of the world at the end of time, when sin and deth will be completely destroyed
On the day of Pentecost the apostles were filled with the powerof the Holy Spirit
The holy spirit gave apostles the courage and ability to go out into the world and teach people about Jesus. So they could accept his redemption
St Irenaeus salvation metaphors highlight
The parallels between these events
The tree of the Knowledge of good of evil
Adam and ApEve disobeyed God by eating from the tree
Adam and Eve’s rejection of God broke the relationship between God and humanity.
The tree of the knowlege of good and evil brought death,by separating humans from God
The tree of the cross
Jesus obeyed God by dying on the cross
Jesus’ acceptance of God restored humanity’s relationship with God
The tree of the cross brought life, by offering the possibility of eternal life in heaven to all people
Strengths of St Irenaeus
Helps to show the parallels between the fall of Adam and Eve and Jesus’ death
Weaknesses of St Irenaeus
Not all Christians agree with St Ireaneus interpretation of the story of Adam and Eve
Strengths of St Anselm
Reflects idea that Christians are slaves to Christs
Weaknesses of St Anselm
Not clear who the “ransom” is paid to.Some Christians this it’s implied that there is someone greater than God
