Redemption Flashcards
What is redemption?
The Christian belief that Jesus made up for Adam and Eve’s sin - and brought humans back into relationship with God
What is The Fall?
- When Adam and Eve changed from obedience to God to disobedience by eating forbidden fruit in Garden of Eden
What is original sin?
Catholic teaching that the fall caused all people to be born with a tendency to commit sin (reject God’s will)
Why did God give humans free will?
- He wants humans to choose to follow him
- However people misuse their free will (sin)
- Sin has to exist in order for people to have true free will
What does atone mean?
Make up for wrong doing
What are the four steps to redemption?
Christians believe Jesus redeemed humans through four steps - his death, burial, resurrection, and ascension
What is the importance of Jesus’ death?
- Fulfilled OT prophecies of Messiah
- Jesus showed obedience and love to God the father (garden of gethsemane) as an example for all people to follow
- restored relationship between God and humans (veil = no barrier between God and humans)
- helped restore ‘cosmic order’ (order in the universe) - helped make creation perfect again
What is the importance of the Burial of Jesus?
- Jesus ‘descended into hell’ and freed those who had died before him (Moses, Abraham etc.) - they rose up to heaven with him
- Jesus promised that his people will follow where he has gone - so God is with people, even in death
What is the importance of Jesus’ resurrection?
- Most important event in Christianity. Told in all four gospels
- Jesus victorious over sin, suffering, and death. All people share in this
- Life after death now possible (sin and death can be overcome)
- Jesus’ followers didn’t recognise him as he had entered a new, different, perfect creation
- “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are in your sins”
What is the importance of the ascension?
- Jesus promised to send Holy Spirit to complete his work
- Jesus instructed disciples to be his witness
- Ascension shows Jesus is with the father, and that Christians will also be raised to heaven
- Jesus told disciples he would return at the end of time
What are Jesus’ three titles and what do they mean?
- Jesus the example - sets example through obedience to the Father
- Jesus the restorer - restored relation between God and humans
- Jesus the victor - defeated sin, death, and suffering - humans can share in this (heaven)
What happened ten days prior to the coming of the Holy Spirit?
Jesus ascended into heaven
What were the disciples doing when the Holy Spirit arrived?
praying
How did the Holy Spirit show itself?
- Rush of a violent wind
- tongues of fire that touched the head of each disciple
What happened to the apostles when the Holy Spirit arrived?
- were able to speak foreign languages to preach that Jesus had risen
- became new men
How did the crowd initially react to the apostles and how did this change?
- Dazzled, amazed, and confused - some thought they were drunk
- This changed when almost 3,000 people were baptised in the name of Jesus by the end of the day
What is Pentecost known as?
- ‘birthday of the church’ because the apostles began to spread the good news and became leaders of the church
What is salvation?
- being saved (or freed) from sin. Going to heaven
Why is salvation possible for individuals?
Jesus redeemed humans
How is salvation present in the past?
- Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection made it possible for people to enter heaven
How is salvation present now?
- We choose whether to accept or reject salvation by following Jesus’ teachings
- Holy spirit guides people towards salvation
How is salvation present in the future?
- Salvation will be completed at the end of time - sin and death will be completely destroyed
What is the heavenly banquet?
- bible promises a victory celebration - everyone in heaven joining together for a meal when salvation is complete
- mass is a chance to experience this ‘heavenly banquet’
- mass therefore inspires us to work towards salvation every day (love, peace, forgiveness)
