Redemption Flashcards
Why does sin exist?
God gave humans free will, therefore sin has to exist
God created humans with the ability to choose between Good and Evil
Why did God give humans free will?
He wants us to actively choose him
What initally broke the relationship between God, humans and all of creation?
Sin
eg Adam and Eve eating of the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil
What helped restore our relationship with God?
Jesus’s Ressurection
How does Jesus’s death play a role in the restoration of the relationship between man and God?
Jesus showed total obedience to the Father
How does Jesus’s resurrection play a role in the restoration of the relationship between man and God?
- Jesus destroyed the power of sin and death
- He helped restore creation (made it perfect) - made life after death possible
How does Jesus’s ascension play a role in the restoration of the relationship between man and God?
- Jesus rose up to heaven
- He helped the ‘cosmic order’ that God created nature to be orderly and does not need to disrupt it to maintain that order
How was there salvation in the past?
Christ’s death and ressurection
How was there salvation in the present?
It is ongoing as sin exists, we can choose to accept or reject God
How will there be salvation in the future?
Salvation will be completed at the end of time
What is the Eucharist (Catholicism)
The bread and the wine which become the Body and blood of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit known as ‘transubstantiation’
What is Salvation
Being saved (or freed)from sin
What is Ascension
When Jesus on the 40th day of his resurrection went up into heaven
What is Conscience
It is the voice of God within everyone and that it should be used to guide decisions
What is a Catholic teaching that links to Conscience
and where it was stated
‘The most secret care of man … where he is alone with God’
Second Vatican Council
What is the four steps to redemption
(Jesus)
Death
Burial
Resurrection
Ascension )
Give 3 examples of death in the 4 steps to redemption
Jesus fulfilled OT prophecies of the Messiah by dying on the cross for our sins
Jesus showed obedience and love to God the Father (Garden of Gethsemane) as an example for all the people to follow
Jesus helped restore ‘cosmic order’ in the universe and helped make creation perfect again
Give an example of Resurrection in the 4 steps to redemption
The resurrection of Jesus and it’s told in all four gospel
Give 2 examples of Burial in the 4 steps to redemption
Through Jesus descending into ‘hell and freeing’ those who had died before him (Moses, Abraham etc) they rose up to heaven with him
Jesus promised that his people will follow where he has gone - so this means that God is with people, even in death
Give 3 examples of Ascension in the 4 steps to redemption
Before Jesus was physically lifted to heaven he promised to send the holy spirit to complete his work
Jesus all instructed the disciples to be his witnesses (tell everyone about him)
Life after death is now possible (sin death can be overcome)
Give 3 examples of resurrection in the 4 steps to redepmtion
(Adam and Eve
Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden and as a result man became separated from God and death was a result of their sins however people repented and Jesus died on the cross for our sins
In the Gospel of John Lazarus died as a result of original sin and his family griefed and requested Jesus’s help who prays to God for help and Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead demonstrating God’s power
Found in Ezekiel 37 the Israelites go through exile due to disobeying God some may say the are spiritually ‘dead’ as they are scattered in this time Ezekiel prophecies hope and God restores Isreal
What is the Heavenly Banquet
The Bible promises a victory celebration - everyone in heaven joining together for a meal - when salvation is complete
The Mass gives people a chance to experience the ‘Heavenly Banquet’
What is Pentecost
It is to remember the coming down of the Holy Spirit over the disciples and the other followers of Jesus while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast week
This led to the disciples speaking in different tongues and they started preaching Jesus had risen which meant 300 people were baptised and the birth of Christianity
What can the Mass inspire people to do
To work towards salvation everyday eg (love, peace, forgiveness etc)
How does the Tree and the cross stated by St Irenaeus link to one another
The tree created the need for salvation caused by the broken relationship between God and humans
Whereas the cross bought salvation for humans (through Jesus’ death) restoring the relationship between God and humans.
How does St Anselim link the slave trade to redemption
By stating that a slave could be freed if someone paid a ransom (money) to their ‘owner’. St Anselim says this is like Jesus’s redemption
In St Anselim saying what happens after the fall
Humans become slaves to sin but Jesus paid a ransom for the sins of all humans with his life
What is conscience
It is the voice of God in peoples hearts guiding them to make the right choices
What is a teaching that links to conscience
The second Vatican which states
‘The most secret care of a man … where he is alone with God’
What is natural instinct
We instinctively know the right thing to do (natural law)
Why do we need to be educated
To help us shape and develop so we interpret things correctly (listening to others, Church teachings,Bible etc)
How is Redemption shown in the Catholic Mass
Due to the Mass for Catholics being seen as the ‘source and summit’ of Christian life
Catholics believe Christ is present in the Catholic Mass in 4 ways name them and given an example
The consecrated bread and the wine
The Priest who (acts in the person of Christ)
God’s word (Bible teaching)
The worshippers as the Body of Christ (the Church)
What is a Bible verse that links to Catholics belief of Christ being present in Mass
Matthew (18:20)
Matthew (18:20)
‘When two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them’
How do Orthodox Christians understand the Eucharist in the same way as Catholics
They see Christ as truly present in the bread and wine (becomes the actual body and bread of Christ)
The SAME AS Catholicism
How do Orthodox Christians understand the Eucharist in a different way from Catholics
. The consecration takes place behind an iconstasis
(a highly decorated screen which divides the altar from the congregation
. Due to the consecration being too holy to be seen by the congregation
How is the Anglican Church is understanding of the Eucharist different from the Catholic church
The bread and wine represent Christ’s body and blood
They emphasise ‘Do this in memory of me’
Christ is present in the community that shares the Eucharist
How is Non conformist Christians understanding of the Eucharist different from the Catholic church
They don’t follow the rules of a central authority (Church of England) e.g. Baptist,Methodist,Quakers.
The purpose of the Eucharist is to remember the Last Supper (no re-enact it)
The Bible is the most central part of worship - Christ is present in the word of God
How is (Quakers) Non conformist Christians understanding of the Eucharist different from the Catholic church
Do not celebrate any form of Eucharist
Christ is present through people’s prayers and actions - when they serve God and people
Do not practise any Sacraments - they believe of a life of Sacraments
What is Eucharist Acloration
A short service in the Catholic church in which the consecrated bread is adored and praised
It is known as Benediction (blessing) because a person is blessed with the real presence of Christ
The consecrated bread is also put in a monstrance and lifted up by the priest (Congregation kneel)
Incense is burnt - symbolising prayers going to God
Does not happen during Mass

The Church = People of God (Christians)
Name 3 ways a Catholic church (building) inspires worship
It’s beauty shows God glory
The care taken in decoration shows devotion/respect for God
It’s a place for the community to worship
3 things in Churches built before 1965
Churches were built facing towards Jerusalem (the city where Jesus was born)
People weren’t involved directly in the mass
The mass was in Latin and was said in silence by the Priest who faced away from the people
3 things in Churches built after 1965
Wanted as many people as possible to see and join in the Mass
Churches began to be built around the altar whit altars sometimes being in the middle like the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral
It made people feel fully involved in the sacrifice and it encouraged everybody to join in with all aspects of the Mass
What is a Lectern
