Red-Shift Flashcards
What’s the Doppler effect?
If a wave source is moving relative to an observer there will be a change in the observed wavelength and frequency
What 3 wave sources can be effected by the Doppler effect?
Light, sound and microwaves
In the Doppler effect, when the source moves away from the observer, what happens to the frequency and wavelength?
Wavelength increases, frequency decreases
In the Doppler effect, when the source moves towards the observer, what happens to the wavelength and frequency?
Wavelength decreases, frequency increases
There is an observed increase in the wavelength of light from…
Most distant galaxies
The further away the galaxies are…
The faster they are moving, and the bigger the observed increase in wavelength
What does red-shift mean?
When the light from a galaxy which is moving away from you is stretched, it moves towards the red end of the spectrum
Which theory does red-shift support?
Big Bang
What is the Big Bang theory?
That the universe began from a very small initial point
How does red-shift support the Big Bang theory?
It’s evidence that the universe is expanding
What is cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR)?
A form of electromagnetic radiation filling the universe
Where does CMBR come from?
The radiation that was present shortly after the beginning of the universe
Which theory is the only one that can explain the existence of CMBR?
Big Bang
