red / irritable eye Flashcards
A 30 year old male complains of intermittent redness of the outer part of his right eye.
Episcleritis
A 45 year old female with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and previous left corneal ulcer has an acutely irritable and painful left eye. The vision is reduced to bare hand movements and the cornea appears cloudy with loss of the fundus reflex.
Endophthalmitis
A 55 year old male has developed progressive redness and irritability of his right eye with reduction in the visual acuity to 6/12. The right eye has become more prominent and there is a recent history of a fractured
skull.
Cartico-cavernous Fistula
A 75 year old hypermetropic female has developed acute pain and redness in her left eye with blurring of vision and coloured haloes around lights. The cornea is cloudy with a dilated non-reacting pupil, but there is a poor fundus view.
Acute Glaucoma
An 18 year old male with a previous history of eczema and bronchial asthma has become aware of redness
and irritability in his right eye. The right eye is generally injected but the cornea bright and the pupil small. The right eye is watering but there is no discharge.
A PMHx of eczema and asthma suggests atopy and may be associated with the development of allergic/
papillary conjunctivitis
