Who might be considered as a vulnerable group?
Infants (up to 3 months)
Elderly (over 80)
Patients who are already ill
Immunity suppressed
Pregnant
Exposure to unusual organisms (such as after foreign travel)
Infants? Esp if under 3 months

Infections can become serious very quickly due to immature immune system, poor temp control, and small size. They lead easily to high temp and dehydration. They are at increased risk of convulsion and circulatory collapse. However in this group fever is not uncommon and usually not serious.

Elderly?
**
Infections can take hold rapidly because of a weakened immune system. Serious disease can hide behind seemingly mild symptoms.

Immunocompromised
The immunocompromised are particularly vulnerable to overwhelming infections. Especially if the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems
Pregnancy
**
Certain infections can directly damage the embryo/fetus or lead to miscarriage. Others may be transmitted to the baby during labour. Prolonged high fever may induce miscarriage or early labour

Recent travel history to tropical country (within past month)
**
Certain tropical diseases including malaria can become rapidly overwhelming and may present up to 4 weeks after return.
