Red Blood Cells Flashcards
Which cells are erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets derived from?
(pluripotent) haemopoietic stem cells (HSCs)
HSCs give rise to lymphoid stem cells and myeloid stem cells, from which erythrocytes, granulocytes, monocytes and platelets are derived
(and they are produced through life in the bone marrow)
What is haemopoiesis?
the formation and development of blood cells
What is the approximate intravascular life span of an erythrocyte?
120 days
What is the approximate intravascular life span of a neutrophil?
7-10hrs
What is the approximate intravascular life span of a monocyte?
several days
What is the approximate intravascular life span of an eosinophil?
a little shorter than neutrophil (7-10hrs)
What is the approximate intravascular life span of a lymphocyte?
varies
What is the approximate intravascular life span of a platelet?
10 days
What is the major function of erythrocytes?
oxygen transport
What is the major function of neutrophils?
defence against infection by phagocytosis and killing of microorganisms
What is the major function of monocytes?
defence against infection by phagocytosis and killing of microorganisms
What is the major function of eosinophils?
defence against parasitic infection
What is the major function of lymphocytes?
humoral and cellular immunity
What is the major function of platelets?
haemostasis
How many blood cells does the average person produce each day?
500 billion
