high unemployment in scotland because of heavy industry decline. being a soldier was a good way to earn wage.
patriotism
love for your country. a lot of scots genuinely were enthusiastic about fighting for their country.
martial traditions
long military history and tradition. scots often followed their fathers and grandfathers into the army, quite often in the same regiment.
prison
prisoners were offered release from their sentences if they joined up.
white feather
handing a white feather to young men not wearing military uniform. you would be called a “coward”
