reconstructive memory Flashcards
what is reconstructive memory (bartlett said)
we make effort after meaning when we remember something so instead of recalling the event exactly we mix it up with elects of our existing knowledge and expectation and remember an event as we think it was
what did bartlett say about making memories
when we process a memory we use perception and imaging
what is perception
when we apply labels to objects and event and are based on past experiences and knowledge which is used when recalling the memory
what is imaging
when we use “effort after meaning ” so we use our own stored images to interpret the memory we could use past knowledge to create a meaning to the memory and once it has meaning it can be easier to store
so when we make a memory it;s
constructed, previous knowledge is used to interpreted the information
evaluation- application to real life
the theory has impacte on uk legal systems, this theory can explain eyewitnesses make errors when reporting a crime they have seen, led to decline report being introduced which states that prosecution cannot be on the basis of a single eyewitness
why are schemas useful
in understanding how our memory can be manipulated by post event information
