Reconstruction
The name given to time period after the Civil War where the US had to rebuild.
Great Plains
Large grassland area west of the Mississippi River and East of the Rocky Mountains.
Assimilation
A Plan for Native Americans to give up their way of life and become part of “white” culture.
Homestead Act of 1862
An act passed that gave allowed any person 160 acres of free land in the Great Plains.
Sitting Bull
A warrior and spiritual leader of the Sioux. He was most famous for defeating General Custer in the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876
Dawes Act
A law made in 1887 that distributed Native Land to individual Natives rather than the collective tribe.
Exodusters
The nickname given to black families who moved west after the Civil War.
Vaquero
Spanish or Mexican cowhand.
Longhorn
The primary breed of cattle used by ranchers in the Great Plains.
Reconstruction Act
The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments.
Andrew Johnson
President who took over after Lincoln was assassinated and began the reconstruction of the US.
Ulysses S. Grant
18th President of the US and famous Civil War general.
13th Amendment
This amendment abolished slavery.
14th Amendment
This Amendment gave equal protection under the law regardless of race or gender.
15th Amendment
this Amendment gave African Americans the right to vote.
