Carperbagger
a white Northerner who moved to the South during Reconstruction to help black people
civil rights
the rights of individuals to political, social, and economic equality
Democratic rights
those entitlements that citizens enjoy and that are fundamental to the continuation
Impeachment
the first step in legally removing an elected official for office
lynching
the act of murdering someone harshly and publicly because of racial hatred, usually a black person by whites
Martial law
legal and physical control by the military
Scalawag
a white Southerner who helped black people during Reconstruction
Vagrancy
traveling around with no job or place t olive, considered a crime in may places
Crop lien
a system where tenants and sharecroppers would promise to pay back a store owner for goods with the money from later crop harvests
Entrepreneur
someone willing to take risks by investing in and managing new businesses
Imperialism
the practice where one country takes control of other countries to gain power in another region of the world
Interest
a fee that must be paid for borrowing money or buying on credit
Monopoly
when a company has total control of an industry or a supply of goods
Sharecropping
a type of tenant farming in which the tenant receives a share of the crop from the landowner as payment for labor
Tenant farming
a system of farming where a farmer rents a plot of land and a house from the landowner
Coup
an overthrow of the government by a small group
Disenfranchise
to deprive someone of opportunity, especially of the right to vote
Literacy test
a test given before a person could register to vote, one method used to disenfranchise black voters
Poll tax
a small tax people had to pay to vote; one method used to disenfranchise black voters
Resurgence
an increase in power or influence after a period without a period without it
Vigilante
a person who takes it upon themselves to punish criminal behavior
Credit
an arrangement that allows a consumer to pay for as good or service over an extended period of time
