How did Lincoln’s reconstruction plan treat people?
Lincoln’s plan pardoned southern states, and protected land; his plan treated people well
How did Radical Republicans reconstruction plan treat people?
Punished southern military, but treated everyone else equally and fairly.
How did Johnson’s reconstruction plan treat people?
Citizens were treated fairly, but had to oath to the US. All ex-confederates were pardoned and land was returned
What rights did the 13th amendment give?
Freedmen could not be forced back into slavery unless they were enslaved by a jail as a result of crime
What rights did the 14th amendment give?
Granted freedmen equal protection of the law, and gave citizenship to anyone born in the US
What rights did the 15th amendment give?
Gave freedmen the right to vote without limitations from the US government
What was the Freedmen’s Bureau?
Assisted freedmen and impoverished whites and helped them live lives outside of poverty
What did the Freedmen’s Bureau do?
The purpose was to assist in establishing schools, purchasing land, locating family members, and legalizing marriages.
How did US military affect reconstruction?
Helped enforce freedmen’s rights; after they pulled out racial violence worsened
What was the period of time after reconstruction called?
Jim Crow Era

What did the Poll Tax and Grandfather Clause do?
created a loophole for 14th and 15th amendment; prevented black people from voting
Black Codes / Jim Crow Laws
restricted freedmen’s rights (could not testify against whites in court, etc)
What did Plessy v. Ferguson allow?
Plessy v. Ferguson allowed separate facilities, so long as they were equal. Blacks in the U.S still had less than whites did in terms of equality. (worse water fountains, or restaurants.)
