What was the Freedman’s Bureau?
It was an agency Congress had created in 1865 to oversee the transition from slavery to freedom.
What are the reasons reconstruction wasn’t successful?
The Black Codes which sought to limit freedman’s economic options.
How was systematic racism developed?
Through the Black Codes which had re-established plantation discipline.
What is the importance of the era?
Law amendments were passed that “affirmed the equality of all men before the law”.

Why was the period called the Gilded Age?
It was a period of growth that disguised the corruption of politicians and businessmen like a thin layer of gilded gold covered a non precious object
What contributed to the development of “big businesses” and industries during this time period?
New and improved machinery that aided the work force and allowed for mass production.
What were the effects of increased railroads?
The railroad shortened the amount of time that it took to cross the country. The rate of shipping and communications increased which had repercussions in every other industry.
How did increase in machinery technology affect the farmers?
Farmers had gone into debt trying to purchase new machinery, and land that was needed to fully utilise the machines.
Urbanization and increased population was a result of what factor?
New machinery created new job opportunities in growing cities such as Chicago, which brought in country dwellers. The influx of immigrants also contributed to growing populations
Why was there a huge influx of immigrants?
Immigrants sought political freedom and economic prosperity

What was American Imperialism?
Post Civil War, Americans became more interested in building an empire of their own, becoming more involved in foreign affairs, breaking isolationism, and exploring expansionism
Why was the US limited in establishing international power?
There were no ambassadors to represent the American interests. Instead, there were only 24 American foreign ministers that were in key countries. These foreign ministers had often not gained their position through diplomatic skills or expertise, but through bribes.
Why was the purchase of Alaska profitable for the US?
It added enormous territory to the country and gave the country access to rich mineral resources the region had, most notably gold which triggered the Klondike Gold Rush.
What was the annexation of Hawaii?
The annexation of Hawaii was the debate on whether or not the US should annex the island of Hawaii. Some native residents saw it beneficial and in favor of it while others were against it.
