What were the causes of the Civil War?
States’ Rights, Slavery, Expansion, Kansas, Election, Secession
Civil War Cause #1: States’ Rights
Congress wanted to decide major issues that would affect all the states
Southern States thought the federal government was taking away their rights
Southern States did not want to pay taxes
Southern states felt they had the right to secede
Civil Rights cause #2: Slavery
Slavery was still legal in many states
Many Southern states depended on slave labor for their farms
Northern States had an economy with little or no slave labor
Abolitionists wanted to end slavery
Civil Rights Cause #3: Expansion
United States was continuing to expand westward
Debate whether each state would allow slavery
Supporters of slavery thought settlers from the south should be able to bring their way of life with them
Civil Rights Cause #4: Kansas
Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed residents in KS to vote whether a state would be free or not
People supported both sides
KS given nickname “Bleeding Kansas” because so many people died in fights
KS admitted to Union as free state Reminder- due October 26th and must be mailed in!! 600-1,000 words
Civil Rights Cause #5: Election
Abraham Lincoln was part of the Republican Party
Many Americans considered him against slavery
Democrats divided over slavery
Lincoln was elected, sparking the Civil war
Civil War cause #6: Secession
Many states in the South decided they didn’t want to be part of the US
Thought they had the right to leave
SC seceded first, then 11 more states
Lincoln sent troops to stop the South form leaving
Union States
