13th Amendment Purpose
Abolished slavery as an institution.
14th Amendment Purpose
Defined + Granted citizenship. Forbids states from denying ppl of life, liberty, or property w/o due process of the law.
15th Amendment Purpose
Voting rights for African American men.

How did the states get around the 13th amendment?
Black Codes (severely limited rights).
How did states get around the 14th Amendment?
Jim Crow Laws (mandated segregation in public spaces).
How did states get around the 15th amendment?
Literacy tests, poll taxes, residency requirements, Grandfather Clause.
Unintended consequences of the 14th Amendment:
Takes away privileges and immunities clause.
Citizenship clause (overturned Dred v Scott).
Equal protection clause (century long neglect to protect black ppl).
Failure to extend B.O.R. to states.
Didn’t protect black citizen’s rights.
Allowed racial segregation.
Unintended consequences of the 15th Amendment:
Loopholes and excluded women from voting.
