Reconstruction
What was/were the goal(s) of Reconstruction after the Civil War?
End the war quickly and reunite the country.
How did Lincoln’s assassination CHANGE what happened during Reconstruction?
Johnson basically kept the same policy, but wanted to humiliate the Southern elite.
What was the 10% Plan?
If 10% of the people of a state pledged their allegiance and ratified the 13th amendment, they could form a state government, elect people to Congress, and fully participate in the Union again.
Explain the 13th Amendment.
abolished slavery in the U.S.
Explain the 14th Amendment.
gave citizenship to anyone born in the U.S., with the exception of Native Americans. Also gave equal protection under the law.
Explain the 15th Amendment.
gave anyone who was a citizen, regardless of race, color, or previously being a slave, the right to vote, except for women.
Explain at least three things that the Freedmen’s Bureau did. ALSO, tell what group(s) it helped.
provided food, clothing, education, medical care, and some protection to African Americans and poor White Southerners
This person was president right after Abraham Lincoln. He did not have the support of Congress with his plan for Reconstruction.
Andrew Johnson
A southern subversive group of businessmen, lawyers, judges, and politicians that intimidated black voters and tried to make sure African Americans were not granted their rights.

What was the difference between sharecropping and working as a slave on a plantation?
with sharecropping, you could rent land and grow/ sell crops
with slavery, you could not do either

What was Congressional Reconstruction and why was it imposed?
a policy that called for military occupation of southern states because of violence showed to the freedmen
How were the economic rights ad independence of freedmen limited during Reconstruction?
they couldn’t receive their own land to work to better themselves
What were black codes and why were they imposed?
laws that restricted the freedmen’s rights; they were imposed to threaten and intimidate them
What were Jim Crow laws?
laws that enforced racial segregation
What was the Compromise of 1877? How did it impact freedmen and Southerners?
agreed to support the election of the Republican candidate in exchange for removal of troops in the South; African Americans were abandoned by the government and Southern governments began passing laws to limit their rights
