What were the goals of reconstruction?
Reconstruction wanted to help restore and reunite America
How did the south respond to Reconstruction?
They didn’t like the 13th amendment, which gave african americans rights
What did the Democrats believe during this period? What people were democrats?
Democrats were southerners; Believed that slavery was a good thing, and promoted its expansion to the west
What did the republicans believe during this period? What people were republicans?
Republicans believed the federal gov should stay out of individual’s affairs in the states. Republicans were northerners
Who were the radical republicans?
Radical republicans wanted the federal government to play an active role in remaking southern policies in society
What was the KKK: purpose; tactics?
restore democratic power to the south; to intimidate african americans into not voting
13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments?
13th- Banned Slavery
14th- All people born in the US are citizens
15th- All citizens can vote
What is the process of impeachment?
1: Information and allegations are presented to the Speaker of the House of Representatives
2: The Speaker of the House refers the information to the Rules Committee. The Rules Committee officially examines the information and sends all to Judiciary Committee.
3: The Judiciary Committee investigates and examines evidence; the committee holds hearings and votes on whether or not to impeach
4: The House of Representatives debates and votes of individual articles of impeachment. A simple majority (50%+1) is needed to impeach
5: Senate then holds a trial to determine whether or not official is guilty of article(s) passed by the House. The Senate must convict with a 2/3s majority vote.
Why was Andrew Johnson impeached? What was the outcome?
Impeached b/c he continued to hire government officials without the Senate’s approval
Successes and Failures of Reconstruction Legacy
Successes: Helped reunite the USA
Failures: No equal rights for African Americans
How was sharecropping similar/different from slavery?
Similarities: Workers still had to work in bad conditions for whites, and had to pay them for their earnings
Differences: Wasn’t technically slavery, Workers not treated as property
Why did Reconstruction end?
Compromise of 1877
